My wife told me 2 weeks ago she has bought her last Album EVER! After purchasing a recent new popular indie band's album, based on the fact she liked 2 tracks she had heard on the radio. She hates the album and has decided to take the stand that she no longer wants to risk spending the extra money without first knowing if she will like it.

To cut a long story short she buys the album, £10, the artist (not inc publishing) gets about 50p, if she buys the 2 tracks separately (3.5p per track to the artist) they will get 8p. This is an 84% reduction in money for the artist from recorded sales.

What business, any business can survive a reduction in income at this level over such a short period of time?

When you talk about image your right its more about what you say in your art then how you look but you know what i've learned in my very short 18 years of life on this earth? Image is like the sprite commercial so aptly put it, nothing. Image is a load of bullshit everyone in the music industry decided to conjure up to help them sell records when there was no talent to be sold to us. Hence Britney Spears. She had that classic innocent southern innocent but gorgeous angle to her and the record execs said fuck it, it'll sell, and put it out there. This "music" is an insult to my intelligence. Where's the expression of yourself? you've got somebody writing the lyrics for you, your producer coming up with the beat over a fucking computer with no soul, and then the one part these pop stars today have to do, sing, is drastically altered over this same bullshit computer. You want real music? Go see a Robert Randolph and the Family Band show. Go listen to Blood Sugar Sex Magik. Go see Pearl Jam. Go see moe.. Do anything but just use your brain and don't listen to this bullshit that is nothing more than music without any balls. These mentioned bands didn't care about image and basically gave the rest of the world a big FUCK YOU by doing what they want. THAT is where music really lives.
