Bob,

I wrote the song "Wrapped" while in the studio at Willie Nelson's place out west of Austin with my buddy Walt Wilkins. Behind the dinner table there is a small square door. It only measures 3ft by 3ft and is about waist high from the floor if you can picture it. It is so awkward to get into. Kinda like crawling in your car through the window. Inside is a chamber the size of a large bathroom. Rectangular in shape and completely tiled in maroon bathroom tile to create the perfect reverb effect. There are no windows and no a/c and no real reason for people to hang out in there unless they just like the feeling/sound of writing in the can.

I can't remember why we went in there that night or what started the song.... I think it was Walt's idea.... But the song came out so fast we didn't even look too hard at it. In retrospect, there are things that I would change about it but I can't. The following morning we recorded wrapped first and so was born one of the most requested songs that we play live. I think for me if I stare at the song I just wrote or listen too hard to a vocal performance in the studio I start to judge it and eventually I want to "fix" it. Usually all that really can happen is the eventual sterilization of something very special. Glad I wasn't given the chance so "fix" wrapped....

Thanks for your kind words about my song. I think everyone I know sent me a link to your stuff. I remember the first time I heard the final version of the song I literally sat in my car all night drinking beer and listening to just that song over and over. I thought it would be my breakout song....alas "Wave" became that and "Wrapped" remained a precious gem I get to keep a little closer to me. It always feels good to make a connection with a song....Again thanks....Pat Green

hey man;

i hit a deer last week, and my little family is down to one car; the ten year old truck i brought into the marriage that keeps holding on. our computer just stopped yesterday, and i'm at the library to check email. we don't have enough $ to cover the deductible yet. we'll have it after i play a dancehall in houston thu night, and that's fine. but my wife is a little worried about money this week, and i understand. anyway, your words changed my morning.

i just subsribed to your work. you're a great writer. thanks for throwing your heart, mind & soul into what sometimes seems like the abyss. of course, it's not, and you clearly know. thanks for the words about "wrapped." i've always loved that song, and sang it 200 times this year, and i'll do it 200 times next year, if i'm lucky. i look forward to reading your stuff, and seeing you down the line sometime.

thank you thank you thank you.

and all good things to you.
